Bioethics Programs under the auspices of the UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS in NYC present:

Food, Famine and Future Technologies: Ethical Dilemmas in a Hungry World

Taking a broad and cross-disciplinary approach to addressing ethical dilemmas raised by genomic applications in agriculture, conference topics include agri-genomic innovations and their impact on society as a whole and environmental, economic, ethical, and social issues within agri-genomics.

The Conference will convey such topics as:

Genomics research in agriculture (agri-genomics) and its diverse applications

Lessons learned from genetically modified organisms for health and development

How to benefit the human health and food supply using genomic crops

Environmental, economic, ethical and social impacts within agri-genomics applications

Consumers perception and the media

Environmental safety

Development of sustainable nutrition for growing populations

How to optimize stakeholder competition and cooperation

These topics will be addressed through paper presentations and panel discussions. The deadline for the submission of abstracts (no more than 150 words) is April 1, 2009. Virtual registrations will be also available for those unable to attend the conference – this allows you to submit a paper for review and possible publication. Registration fee for speakers is $235, for the general public is $145 and for students who attend is $100. All fees are payable by check to the address above by April 15, 2009. Registration fees include attendance at the cocktail reception and at the two-day conference as well as refreshments.

The Appignani Bioethics Center (ABC), a project of the American Humanist Association, is a think tank which provides timely research and analysis of bioethical challenges facing national and international community. The Center helps inform local, state, national and international policy debates about global issues in medical and biotechnological sciences through collaboration with not for profit organizations (NGOs) and United Nations departments, bodies and agencies.
