Genesis of the Humanist Society in New Zealand

(adapted from the diaries of foundation member, Eric Grimes)

Eric Grimes, a founder member and life member of the Humanist Society of New Zealand, was born in South Africa, leaving school in Form 4 to work, among other jobs, as a reef sampler in a gold mine. Joining the Medical Corps of the vouluntary South African army in 1941, he served in the Middle East and Italy, on his return to South Africa, training as a nurse at a mine hospital. After the 1948 change of government he emigrated to New Zealand to work in psychiatric and general hospitals. In 1952 he began training at Auckland Teachers' College and continued in teaching till he retired. He completed a BA and an MA in Anthropology at Auckland University. Eric Grimes has been National President for three separate terms and a stalwart of the Auckland Branch.
